Crochet Baby Blanket Finished!

I finally have the crochet blanket finished and ready to be sent out to the new owner.  If you remember back to this post and this post, I showed you where I got the pattern from and a quick update on my progress.  It took me way longer than I thought it would but it turned out so good!! I’m so proud to have my first crochet blanket accomplished!

When I was laying out the squares I realized that the blanket was going to be too small.  I had a decision to make, I could either make more squares or I could make my current squares bigger.  I elected on the second option and added one additional row around each square before putting them all together.

They look so cute together!

Do you like the blanket in the background??

I think I made the right choice, I like how there is a bit more room between each circle.  The picture above is a bit of a sneak peek at my upcoming post but it was the only picture I liked of the blanket laid out.

Finally, I've finished the blanket!! I think it turned out wonderfully!

I’m so excited that I can send this off to the new owner.  Hope their baby enjoys the blanket as much as I have enjoyed putting it together!

Breakfast Muffin Hack

I have previously mentioned that I tend to make muffins fairly regularly. Well, those muffins are ones that I make for Nate.  However, I am not a huge fan of carrot muffins.  So, I take that recipe, remove the carrots and flax, and [sometimes] add peanut butter to make a muffin recipe for me.

I love my muffin recipe!!!  I love it so much I pretty much have one for breakfast with a banana five days a week.  Muffins are so easy to tote to work!! And, since I head out the door at 7am for my hour-ish commute every day, I’m generally not hungry before I go into work.

My morning glory muffins didn't last long enough like this!

My morning glory muffins didn’t last long enough like this!

However, there is a little problem of shelf life with my delicious little muffins… as in they don’t stay yummy long enough for me to eat them all.  I first tried putting them all in the fridge but that didn’t extend the shelf life long enough.  So then I started to freeze them.  Which worked perfectly but I couldn’t add butter to them before I left for work.  And, why keep a stick of butter at my desk for my morning muffin??  That seemed just silly.

After a few months of thinking I finally came up with the most ingenious idea.  So great that I couldn’t keep it to myself.  An idea this fantastic I had to share with others!

To make my muffins last I decided to add butter to the muffins before I freeze them.  So… here is what I did.

I took all the muffins out of the plastic bag that I have pictured above. I then cut each muffin in half and add butter to one of the halves…

Cut in half, butter added, closed back up

Then I closed each muffin back up so that I could individually wrap them.

I grabbed the cling wrap out of the cupboard and went to work wrapping them…

Muffins all wrapped up

Back into the large ziplock bag the individually wrapped muffins went and all of the made it into the freezer.

Now, I just have to grab the muffin out each morning and take it to work.  Generally by the time I get to work its thawed and I warm it up in the microwave to melt the butter.

I feel like a genius!

My Favorites This Week

This week has been a bit different, a bit hectic, and a bit overwhelming [but more on that later].  That being said, I have a little bit different Favorites this week.  Generally I love to scour the internet to find interesting blogs or things related to some of my favorite topics [food, fashion, crafting, etc] but since this week was so crazy most of my favorites actually came from the Today Show, since that is what I watch every morning while I’m getting ready.

Golden Globes || To be honest, I didn’t watch the Golden Globes but I did enjoy watching the highlights on the Today Show the next day.  This ‘joke’ about George Clooney made me laugh out loud [which can be very difficult to do before 7am] so I thought it was worth sharing.

Music || As I watched the Today Show this morning, I thought DJ Earworm was brilliant with this mashup of pop music from 2014.  I have listened to it several times this morning and can’t get enough of it!  Enjoy!!

brussel sprouts

Food || Martha Stewart’s recipes for clean eating in 2015 that were showcased on the Today Show look absolutely delicious!  I really want to try the Brussels sprout salad.  Yummy!

Mom’s Crochet Square Purse with Leather

Aren’t you glad I didn’t keep you waiting long for Mom’s purse?!?!?  So to get right back into it…

Once I decided that I needed to make a purse for my SIL I thought my mom deserves one too!  But, to fit her personal style I needed to do things a little differently.  As much as I love big purses, my mom likes smaller ones.  And she LOVES the color purple.

So back to Pinterest I headed and found a few different purse options that I decided to put together to make her purse.  Purse #1 I loved the way they used leather on the bottom of the purse.  Purse #2 was amazing because Mom loves side pockets.  I also liked the scalloped pattern of purse #2 so I went to my saved crochet stitches on Pinterest and choose the Shell Pattern from Lion Brand yarn.

I already had the purple yarn at home [bonus] and Nate had some leather scrap I could use for the bottom [why I didn’t take a picture I couldn’t tell you].  So I got to moving on my second Christmas present.

For the side pocket I used the same yarn as the colorful yarn on SIL’s purse and found some animal print fabric from Etsy for the inside of the purse.  After crocheting it, I used my sewing machine to sew the inside liner, and then sewed the liner to the crochet purse by hand.  Nate, once again, made the handles for her purse and I put a snap on the inside so that Mom can easily close the purse.

The final results for Mom’s purse…

I’m very happy to report that Mom loves her purse as well!!!  I had a lot of fun putting them together and was so happy with the results… I’m so glad they were too!

Crochet Granny Square Purse

Before Christmas I was all a buzz making Christmas present.  I wanted to share my work on here so badly however with them being presents I couldn’t do so.  I finally have a few pictures I can share with you and I’m so excited to do so!!!

However, before I start sharing I thought I would let you know that its not uncommon for me to want to make things for people however I get so nervous, once it comes time to give it to them, that they wouldn’t like it.  And these gifts were no exception.  Actually, I was probably more nervous than usual since I crochet these… and I just learned how to crochet in 2014 [can you believe that is last year already]!

None-the-less the gifts were very well received, and without further ado, lets get to the gifts… since Nate had crafted a few gifts for everyone that were more guy-related, I wanted to make something for the ladies that they could appreciate.  My brother has been telling me for a few years that my sister-in-law wanted a new purse.  When I lived in Cambodia I searched and searched for a purse that I thought would be perfect… I didn’t find the perfect one… however I found one that I thought she may enjoy and gave her that last year.  But that was last year.

This year I was scanning thru Pinterest and found this purse that Marinke from A Creative Being had for sale on Etsy.  And I thought it was perfect!!!  I finally found the perfect purse for my SIL… however it wasn’t in the colors I thought she would love.

I headed down to the local Walmart [cause that is the only place around that I have found to buy yarn] and actually found a beautiful color.  It was perfect.

So then I needed to find a granny square pattern that I liked and I found this one on Moogly Blog that fit what I was going for.

After making all the granny squares [and making a few extra so I could choose only the best ones] I had to find a good color to connect the squares and I thought the bright pinky-purple color would work well.

After crocheting everything, I made the interior of the purse.  I forgot to take a picture of the inside but it’s half silk and half leather.  And, of course, my amazing husband did the leather work inside the purse and the straps.  After all was done, I added a button so she can close the purse if she so chooses.

After putting it all together here is the final result…

I am quite happy to say she LOVES the purse as much as I do… if not more!!! Even Nate thought it turned out perfectly!!

Want to see the purse I did for Mom… Stay tuned!!!

Moisturizing Vanilla and Almond Body Wash with Shea Butter Recipe

I’ve been trying to perfect my body wash recipe for quite a few months and I think I have something that will work perfectly for me… so its time to share it with you!! Yay!!

My favorite body wash had been St. Ives Oatmeal and Shea Butter and I wanted to make something that could compare to it.

I started with a recipe that was only 3 ingredients and super easy… however it was not foamy at all, which is something I have always loved about the store bought body wash options, and it used coconut oil.  In fact, most body wash recipes that I found use coconut oil, which as I explained in this post, I don’t like so much.

I found a really good body wash recipe on Live Simply and she added vegetable glycerine to give the soap some foam.  I immediately went onto Amazon and bought some for myself and it did the trick.  Still, the recipe called for coconut oil.  My first few recipes included it but neither my husband or myself liked the smell.

So, I make one small tweak and fell in love with it.

Body Wash Ingredents

Body Wash Ingredients

First, melt the Shea butter and then add the rest of the ingredients together in a large mason jar.  Spin that lid on the mason jar and shake, shake, shake.  I don’t like the idea of keeping glass in my shower so I don’t keep my body wash in a glass jar… I’m currently using an old Now Sweet Almond Oil container and it works perfectly.

I love a hot shower which works perfectly for my body wash… the steam from my shower helps to melt the shea butter a bit more before I use the body wash.  And I always make sure I shake up the body wash before I use it.  At 8,000 feet [and being a very dry climate] I use all the moisturizing I can get… and this body wash provides it!

My Favorites This Week

I had an amazing Christmas and New Years holiday, and I hope you did too!!! One thing that kinda got pushed aside during the past few weeks is [obviously] this blog, which means I missed a week or two of favorites.  But, they are back!!  And I am so excited to share some of my favs with you…

Nate's Bling Spur Straps

Nate’s Bling Spur Straps

Cowboy ||  Nate May Leather Shop does amazing leather work [and I don’t just say that because he is my husband]!  For years he has been making some amazing leather goods for the cowboy… this year he was commissioned by a couple of clients to make leather goods for the cowgirl!  He made spur straps with BLING on them and they turned out absolutely amazing!!! I’m so impressed with his ability and talent.  And now I want him to add bling to my orders 😉

Love this tulle skirt!!

Love this tulle skirt!!

Fashion || Extra Petite is one adorable woman who shows fashion ideas for the petite women on her blog.  I am not really petite [although I have bought from the petite sections before] however I love her fashion sense.  She is constantly showing her readers how to style for business but also how to take that same style and dress down.  And, she will sometimes make her own clothes, including this tulle skirt, which I want to make some day! We all know I love a good tulle skirt!

Yummy Cranberry Hot Toddy

Yummy Cranberry Hot Toddy

Drinks || Cranberry Hot Toddy by She Wears Many Hats looked so delicious I just had to try it for myself.  Nate makes an amazing hot toddy recipe so when I’m cold or feeling under the weather he makes me my hot toddys.  However, this looked like a pretty amazing change up.  I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand [and I wasn’t making for four people] so I had to improvise a bit.  Basically, I cut the recipe by four, then cut the pure cranberry juice down and added water, left out the star anise [since I didn’t have any], and used whiskey instead of rum.  And it turned out delicious!!!  Please try one for yourself [if you are over 21, of course]!

How Adorable is this Reindeer Amigurumi?!?!?!

How Adorable is this Reindeer Amigurumi?!?!?!

Crochet ||  I guess I’m still stuck on Christmas [even though we took our decorations down a week ago] because I think this reindeer amigurumi is the cutest by Tales of Twisted Fiber.  And its a free pattern!  How nice of her to share it with us.  I think I’ll need to be making some for next Christmas!
